Battambang is a beautiful province located on the western side of Tonlé Sap Lake and shares a border with Thailand. Known as one of Cambodia’s richest agricultural regions, Battambang is the country’s leading rice-producing area and one of the most populated provinces. Its fertile lands, peaceful countryside, and traditional villages make it an important center of Cambodian rural life and culture.

In recent years, Battambang has become an increasingly popular destination for international travelers due to its convenient location between Thailand and Cambodia. Many visitors choose to travel through Battambang as part of a journey connecting Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. One of the most interesting experiences is traveling along the scenic Sangker River, where visitors can observe local daily life, traditional fishing activities, riverside communities, and the natural beauty of the countryside.

Battambang is also an excellent destination for cycling enthusiasts. Cycling through quiet villages, rice fields, fruit farms, and ancient temples offers travelers an authentic way to experience the local lifestyle and interact with friendly villagers. The province combines culture, history, agriculture, and nature, creating a relaxing and memorable travel experience away from the busy tourist crowds.

important attractions:

Ek Phnom
Wat Ek Phnom is an angkorian temple located on the left side of the Sangkae River at the small creek of Prek Daun Taev northwest the G Peam Aek spot approximately 9 km north of the city of Battambang in north western Cambodia. It is a Hindu temple built in the 11th century under the rule of king Suryavarman I. Although partly collapsed and looted it is famous for its well-carved lintels and pediments.
Phnom Banon
Wat Banan is the best-preserved of the Khmer temples in Battambang Province. The distinctive five towers of the temple are similar to the much larger and more famous temple of Angkor Wat. At the base of the mountain, is a step laterite staircase flanked by nagas.
The 11th century temple was built by King Udayadityavarman II son of the king Suryavarman I and despite some looting it is in a considerably better state of repair than Wat Ek Phnom. It was built to give thanks, ask for help, and pray to God. In this era, they have a strong belief in the god. Especially in Hindu.
Phnom Sampov
The killing caves of Phnom Sampeau are a Khmer Rouge execution site on Phnom Sampeau, a hill 7 mi (11 km) southwest of Battambang in western Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge killed their victims on top of the cave at the rim of a daylight shaft or ceiling hole and then threw the dead body into the cave. Men and women were placed in separate caves and clothes in another. There are a number of caves at Phnom Sampeau (Sampeau Hill) that have traditionally served as Buddhist temples. Today there is a large glass memorial in the cave next to the skulls and bones and a golden reclining Buddha, that can be reached via a staircase. A memorial, assembled from cyclone fencing and chicken wire contains human bones at the base of the stairway.
Beong Kamping Pouy
Kamping Puoy is a reservoir located around 30 km from the town of Battambang accessible by a new road. The trip out here is part of the attraction as it passes through some stunning countryside. Once at the reservoir there are a number of food and drink stalls to rest at and it is possible to charter a boat to take you out on the lake and maybe visit some of the people who live in stilt houses.
The reservoir was built by the Khmer Rouge in one of their grander schemes and thousands of people died during its construction. It is popular with locals at the weekend who come out here with picnics.
Bamboo Train
A norry or nori from the French word for lorry) was an improvised rail vehicle service from Cambodia. Lonely Planet describes it as "Cambodia's bamboo train". The trains ran at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph) on the metre gauge tracks around Battambang and Poipet. A scheduled service ran by the Government also operates, but is slower at 30 km/h around 18 mph. The rest of the network, originally built by the French colonial government, is largely abandoned, after the Khmer Rouge regime effectively shut it down. In 2006 the BBC reported that there was only one scheduled service a week and it ran at not much more than walking pace.

By October 2017 the bamboo train was no longer available in the original form due to the resumption of rail service between Poipet and Phnom Penh. However, the bamboo train is being rebuilt near Wat Banan in order to cater to the local tourism industry. The relocated site is set to open in middle January 2018.
Wat Damrei Sor
Damrey Sor Pagoda was established in 1904, with the main temple building completed in 1908 , under the patronage of the one of the wives of the local King.
Damrey Sor Pagoda is a working temple with resident monks. This temple is also a centre of learning with the eastern part of the temple a designated ‘Buddhist University’ with courses in various subjects, such as the Thai language.
Damrey Sor Pagoda is large sprawling temple complex with a mix of Khmer and Thai design styles reflecting Battambang’s own history as a part of Cambodia which was under Thai control from 1795 until 1907.
